Sisterhood, Strength, and the Legacy of Marilyn Coulter
The labor movement lost a beloved union sister on May 15, 2026, with the passing of Sister Marilyn Coulter of UAW Local 602.
Marilyn was the kind of union sister every woman hopes to meet along her journey. She was firm but gentle, strong but kind, had a positive outlook, and had a gift for teaching others. She was a mentor of mine, my friend, and one of those women who made everyone around her better.
Marilyn was an advocate for civil and human rights and a passionate supporter of women's issues. She understood that progress comes when experienced sisters reach back and help lift up those coming behind them and she always did just that.
Sisterhood is one of the greatest strengths of our labor movement. It is found in the conversations, the encouragement, the lessons shared, and the support we give one another. Marilyn embodied that spirit. She believed in lifting others up and making sure no one walked alone. She was always the voice of reason, always listened and always gave sound advice.
Women like Marilyn leave more than memories. They leave a legacy. They leave behind stronger sisters, stronger unions, and a better path for those who follow.
As we mourn the loss of our sister, we also celebrate a life dedicated to service, equality, and solidarity. The greatest tribute we can give Marilyn is to continue the work she cared so deeply about, to support one another, and to never stop fighting for fairness and dignity for all.
The last time I saw Marilyn was in February at Local 652’s Black History program. She came walking in, dressed to the nines with tan colored leather pants and a winter white sweater. I said to her, “Dang sis, you are bringing it, dressed in all of that beautiful leather, you look amazing!” Her reply was, “You know how I do it!” Yes, sister Coulter, I know how you do it. AMAZINGLY, in everything.
Rest easy, Sister Marilyn. Thank you for showing us the ropes and teaching us true unionism/activism and most importantly, sisterhood. We will take it from here.
