December 2024

This was another one of those years where I spent entirely way too much time thinking about getting the year over with and moving on to the next.  I’m not sure if it is due to the extremely conneceted world we live in, but this year's election elevated political fatigue to new heights.  This coupled with the suspense as our members and the local wait for news related to product investment at our GM unit.  However, now that we are in the home stretch, I am desperate to find just a couple more weeks to tack onto the year.  Whether it’s more time to finish up year-end tasks or to simply enjoy a few more days of that mild late fall we enjoyed, I am once again regretting wishing time away.

Despite the headaches, UAW Local 652 members had a lot of positive news.  Our Ryder and Avancez units saw the addition of new shifts as they worked to support LDT Assembly.  While still not perfect, staffing those shifts is getting easier and easier each month too.  Our eligible GM unit retirees have seen their UAW VEBA continue to strengthen; a far cry from the lean days.  With improved OTC perks and negotiated December bonuses, there’s a little bit for everyone.  Despite losing a shift, our GM unit is continuing to train and hire new skilled trades positions.  The GM unit is also in the first year of impressive wage gains, an improved TAP program, and more skilled trades opportunities thanks to an even better STARC program.  All units of the local will benefit from a bargained future $1.25 billion investment for the GM unit.  Now, if only Mary would commit and release those details at a much faster pace.  Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the hard work being put in at our Ryder unit as they work to secure a new collective bargaining agreement with the company.

As we are preparing for the holiday season it’s guaranteed that next year is going to arrive.  It too will offer us highs, lows, and everything in between.  Despite these ebbs and flows the working class of this country will continue to fuel the machine.  A machine that has had impressive job growth, record stock market figures, and one of the most inspiring ascents from the doldrums of pandemic and greed-induced inflation.  While organized working folks face a new year with a likely pro-business, anti-NLRB collection of leaders, we have proven our ability to adapt and overcome.  And in between the cloudy days, instead of wishing the time away, we can enjoy the good news the year has to offer.  Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year!
