April 2026
Spring has sprung, Lansing Labor News readers, and I hope you’ll soon be able to get out and enjoy the new season. On the subject of spring, or spring chickens rather, a little birdie has told me that an avid Labor News reader and former 652 bargainer is turning 90! Happy birthday, Dick Philips.
While there is no shortage of current events affecting the organized working class, I want to devote one more article to the importance of up-to-date membership information. This topic is especially important as we head into the election and constitutional season here within the UAW.
As a result of the 2021 Referendum, the UAW adopted a direct voting system. This has not only resulted in increased politicking, expensive direct elections, and an expensive federal monitor, but also demands accurate membership information for the mailing of ballots. Up-to-date member information is important to all Locals, but in this article, I want to focus on Local 652 members.
For our active members, I have some good news. This requires relatively little work. As long as you keep your contact information current with your employer, the Local receives limited, but sufficient information to keep records up-to-date. Knowing this, remember that you are always welcome to contact the Local with updates; there's a spot on our website for just that purpose.
For our retirees, life events and changes in contact information require more involvement on your end. As a retiree, if your information changes, the only person who knows is you. There are no employer reports, and with the advent of direct deposit, no pension reports either. Luckily, communicating these changes as they happen is easy. Some of the methods are listed on the next page.
Also, don’t forget to update your information with the Trust, GM Benefits, and your insurance plans.
